I've noticed that my most severe cycles of depression occur in the early spring (April and May). There are exceptions, of course. How fitting that May should be Mental Health Awareness Month in America.
Depression is not a sign of weakness -- something I often have to remind myself. It is a sign that you have been trying to be strong for too long. Anxiety is not a sign of immaturity -- something that many people misjudge. Many mental illnesses can be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, and aren't always under your control. Some mental disorders are genetic. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), one in three people suffer mental illness at some point in their lives, and one in four adults suffer in any given year.
